Korean Shipbuilders Accelerating Development of Autonomous Surface Ships

news-details

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is preparing to discuss new agreements, operation methods and terminology regarding maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS).

At present, technical standards, international rules and regulations are zero when it comes to MASS. Under the circumstances, South Korean shipbuilders are aiming to preoccupy related standard technologies in order to keep leading the global shipbuilding market in the future.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group signed a memorandum of understanding with the American Bureau of Shipping in January this year in order to cooperate in the fields of approval in principle, demonstration and testing, etc. According to the MOU, Avikus, the group’s MASS-developing subsidiary, will demonstrate its autonomous navigation and docking solutions in stages in order to lead technical standardization at the IMO.

Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering are also concentrating on technological demonstration. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is developing DAN-V as a prototype vessel and Samsung Heavy Industries, which has conducted research on the technology since 2016, is aiming to commercialize it this year.
